The 42nd Street Quartet

How did you get into the wedding business?
We are all members of the Des Moines Symphony and have known each other for many years. We formed a string quartet because we wanted to have the opportunity to just do some playing for fun. String quartet music is different than symphony music in that it is chamber music and allows each player to be more of a soloist. Our initial intention was just to play for ourselves for enjoyment. After meeting a few times, we were asked to play for a wedding and decided that we liked the idea of being able to play for other people in addition to playing just for ourselves. We still meet for fun when we can work it into our schedules.
Describe what your company does?
As far as the business goes, we furnish music for weddings and background music for other events. In addition to wedding ceremonies, we have done the music for wedding cocktail hours and dinners, funerals, and for receptions and dinners for other types of events.
What do brides like most about your company?
Our professionalism, our wide variety of music availability, and our performance quality.
What is your favorite thing about being in the wedding industry?
Being able to play music that we enjoy and have other people enjoy it.
What is the most memorable moment you have seen at a wedding?
One wedding couple met in Casablanca. Because of that they asked if we could play “As Time Goes By” for their first dance and we were able to accommodate them.
