Make your big day A SENSATION

Roberta Randall with ASensation spoke with Des Moines Wedding News about her DJ business.

How did you get started in the DJ business?
I started my deejay career with a local deejay service in 1999. I wanted to become more comfortable in front of large groups of people and use my love/knowledge of music and event planning talents.  After graduation, from Drake Law School,  I started ASensation! with Kirby Brown and have been fortunate to find several very talented men to work for A Sensation. I love planning receptions and working with couples to make their reception express their unique personalities. I have developed a planner and I take it very seriously that as soon as they sign the contract, I am their employee. I am available to help them plan every aspect of their wedding and often want to tell them to USE ME-I can take some of the pressure off the planning.
What are 2 reasons brides choose A Sensation?
One is that the DJs are good natured, talented and great to work with. The other is that we take digital pictures of all the events we do. I decided at my first reception that we were going to offer that at no cost and of course no guarantee. We take anywhere from 100-400 pictures/event. I edit the pictures and put less than 100 on kodakgalleries.com through our website. Anybody can view them, and anybody can order from kodakgalleries. com. I edit the rest of the pictures and mail a DVD to the couple with all the pictures on there. I do not post anything questionable or in poor taste on the public website. But I do make sure the couple has the proof of how much their guests enjoyed the reception.
What is your favorite thing about weddings?
Favorite thing about weddings is the cake. No really, it is just helping make the most important day of their lives just the way they want it! Even if they have been married and hire us for a reception later on, it is still flattering to help plan and execute a fun party for all the important people in their lives, sharing their happiness and joy!
What are some of your best memories from weddings?
Over the years, I have heard some wonderful toasts, seen fathers and mothers weep as they dance with their newly married child, seen some very mature interactions between young newlyweds. I love to do the married couple dance and see the pride the couples have on being married 35, 50, or even 60 years. When asked what piece of advice they would offer to the newlyweds, inevitably the message is to be kind and the guys always say “Tell her she is right”. (As a woman, I agree). I can’t say that one memorable moment stands out. One  memory is of a wedding and almost every other song was dedicated to Eddie. When I asked where Eddie was, they all yelled “In prison!!” Never did find out what Eddie did to get in the slammer but everybody really missed him!

What kind of opportunities have you had since you have been in the DJ business.
I have had the opportunity to do many wonderful things with my dj business. I will donate or greatly reduce my rates for certain organizations. I have opened for Whoopi Goldberg at the Civic Center. I have dj’d very small intimate events and huge over 500 in attendance receptions. I remember all of the couples and have great memories of the music, dancing and smiles on many faces. I love this business and look forward to every new customer.
Do you use still use CD’s?
We do still use CDs because I have found so many computers crash and I don’t want to ruin anybody’s reception.
I am always ready to answer questions and enjoy meeting with indecisive couples. We are at the Bridal Forum at Hyvee Conference Center twice a year and offer a discount for those who stop by our booth.
